As winter sets in, you may be beginning to feel symptoms of the “winter blues”. Before brushing off any unusual amounts of tiredness or sadness, you may want to consult with your doctor to determine if your symptoms are that of Seasonal Affective Disorder, more commonly known as seasonal depression.

What is Seasonal Affective Disorder?

Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) is a type of depression directly related to the changing seasons. It often starts to take effect in the fall and winter months but can occur for some during the spring and summer months as well. Those living with SAD often feel lethargic and moody, preventing them from enjoying activities and gatherings as they would in other months.

What Causes SAD?

Those at risk for SAD often have a family history of the disorder, struggle with major depression or bipolar disorder year-round, or live far north or south of the equator. Studies have also shown that women are at greater risk of developing SAD. Diagnosis can be determined through a physical exam, lab tests, or psychological evaluations.

How is Seasonal Depression Treated?

There are a variety of ways that SAD can be treated. Some common treatments include counseling, light therapy (photo therapy), and medication. Counseling is an effective way to identify the symptoms, causes, and behaviors that can help overcome this type of depression. At Zumbro Valley Health Center, we provide adult counseling services to work alongside you through mental health diagnosis, helping guide you towards a more fulfilling, healthier life.  Photo therapy can be performed by placing a special light box wherever you spend the first hour of your day. This type of light mimics natural outdoor lighting, which has been proven to change the chemicals in the brain linked to mood. For those seeking medication, this type of treatment can be prescribed to help prevent major depressive episodes. Often times, those with severe symptoms will benefit most from medication.
